Norway IBAN Format: The Shortest IBAN in Europe
Norwegian IBANs are just 15 characters — the shortest of any IBAN country. They encode an 11-digit account number directly.
Norwegian IBAN Structure
A Norwegian IBAN is always 15 characters long — the shortest of all IBAN countries:
- NO — country code
- XX — 2 check digits
- XXXX — 4-digit bank code
- XXXXXXX — 6-digit account number + 1 check digit
Example: NO93 8601 1117 947

Why Is the Norwegian IBAN So Short?
Norway's domestic banking system uses an 11-digit kontonummer that encodes bank, branch, and account. The compact structure results in the shortest IBAN of any participating country — only 11 BBAN digits compared to Germany's 18 or France's 23.
Norway and SEPA
Norway is a SEPA member through the European Economic Area (EEA). It uses Norwegian krone (NOK), so SEPA rules apply only to euro-denominated payments. DNB is Norway's largest bank; Nordea and SpareBank 1 are also major players.
